| It lies in the high Tuscany both in Siena and Florence provinces. Historically this territory has always been contested between these 2 Medieval powers.
The centers, castles and fortified villages founded in the area have always been influenced by this boundary situation. The most populated villages are Castellina, Gaiole and Radda in Chianti in Siena province and are flourishing tourist and country areas. This land is home of one of the most famous brand wine in the world. In 1927 the Chianti Wine Association was founded and nowadays it counts more than 2.500 producers with more than 13.000 hectares of vineyard for more than 80.000.000 litres of Chianti each year.
Chianti Denomination of Origin (DOC) was authorised on 1967 while Chianti Denomination of origin controlled and guaranteed (DOCG) in 1984.
